Visual identity and UI design for the update of the iconic MS Paint, where I influenced the visual direction from early conceptual phase to shipping the end product that is Windows 10 OS today. Leading across the ‘3D For Everyone’ program and the team, through the creation of eye-catching, colourful visuals from iconography, UI, logo, swag and video graphics.

The brief required us to: ‘Make 3D creation easy for everyone’ — by designing an experience that would broaden the appeal to a younger, ‘Gen Z’ audience but at the same time, caters to the gigantic existing user base (around 90 million active users per month) — by updating the features of the old MS Paint without compromising its simplicity.

This combination of priorities made this project extremely challenging, but definitely extremely fun to be part of!

Client: Microsoft

Since a big focus for us was to make Paint friendlier and more in line with apps that younger generations use, we saw this as a big opportunity to have an influence on the overall Windows design. The iconography, stickers and colour added personality and fun to the ‘3D For Everyone’ program and to the wider Windows ecosystem (a few months before Windows 10 was announced), receiving great praise from consumers to other teams across the organisation after the beta launch.

The vibrant gradient feels fresh, inclusive and provides enough contrast making the UI accessible for everyone.
